The Master Myelin-nator
The Master Myelin-nator
A Reflection on Faith, Practice, and Rewiring the Soul
I’ve been reading The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle, and it cracked something open in me. The book explores how talent isn’t something you’re born with—it’s something you build. And the science behind it? Wildly encouraging.
As someone starting this creative journey with music and storytelling at 34, I’ve been noticing steady improvement in singing and playing piano. But I didn’t quite understand how or why. Coyle’s work explained it: I’ve been growing myelin. And that changes everything.
But this post isn’t just about the science. It’s about a moment I had while meditating—talking to God, or as I like to say, The One. That’s when I had a realization that made me laugh and tear up all at once.
God is the Master Myelin-nator.
What Is Myelin (and Why It Matters)?
In Coyle’s book, myelin is explained like this:
• Myelin is the insulator that wraps around your brain’s neural pathways.
• The more you practice a skill, especially through “deep practice” (focused repetition with correction), the more myelin builds around that neural circuit.
• More myelin = faster, stronger, and more accurate signals = mastery.
Put simply: practice makes pathways. The right kind of practice makes them stronger.
Faith as a Form of Deep Practice
As I was sitting in meditation, going through my own version of the 6 Phase Meditation from Mindvalley, I felt a wave of gratitude. I realized that my life has been changing—not by accident, but through small, repeated acts of correction and connection.
“Should I do this?”
“Does this decision make sense?”
“What am I supposed to learn from this?”
Over and over again, I bring those questions to God. And over and over, I feel a subtle shift. A nudge. A correction. A decision made clearer. And I act.
What I didn’t realize is that this daily listening is also myelination.
I’m building spiritual muscle memory. I’m learning how to hear, trust, and act. I’m rewiring my connection with the Divine.
Maybe that’s what we call faith.
The Practice of Becoming
The first time we try to listen for Divine guidance? It’s awkward. Like a baby talking to an adult. Or a toddler banging on piano keys (which is how I feel most days, to be honest). But if we keep going, keep practicing, we start to notice:
• We hear more clearly.
• We trust more deeply.
• We act with less hesitation.
• And our creative and spiritual intuition strengthens.
I’ve been rereading Trust Your Vibes by Sonia Choquette—a practical guide to tuning into that sixth sense. I’ve read it three times, and each time, I gain more clarity. More confidence. More quiet knowing. Without realizing it, I’ve been myelinating my spiritual instincts.
The Master Teacher
So yes, talent is built. But so is trust.
God is the Master Myelin-nator—guiding me, shaping me, and helping me become more of who I already am. I’m grateful for every teacher, every book, every voice that has helped reinforce that path.
But most of all, I’m grateful for the One who rewires my life with every yes, every no, and every nudge.
Here’s to more practice.
Here’s to more becoming.
Thanks Gus.
